SIEGE OF LENINGRAD

The Siege of Leningrad, which occurred during World War II, was a prolonged military blockade undertaken by German and Finnish forces against the city of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) in the Soviet Union. Lasting for 872 days. During the siege, Leningrad suffered severe food and fuel shortages, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians due to starvation, exposure, and bombardment. The city's population endured unimaginable hardships, with rationing of food and utilities and the constant threat of air raids and artillery bombardment. Despite the extreme conditions, the people of Leningrad demonstrated remarkable resilience and spirit, and the city's defense became a symbol of Soviet resistance against the invading forces. The siege was eventually broken by the Soviet Army in January 1944, marking a significant turning point in ww2.
